Reward for Olcan ashe takes the top prize

This very able and enthusiastic golfer combined bogeys at 2 and 6 with birdies at 4, 13 and 15 for a round of 69, his second sub-par round of the year, to win by 3 shots.

Joe Dowey Jnr, off 6, was the better of two players on 40 points with his level par back 9 for 21 points. This is the third time in a fortnight Joe has played below his handicap and it earns him a return to Category 1, around which he has hovered for many years.

Young Aodhan Scullion began the year playing off 14, but his 40 points earned him both 3rd place and a reduction of handicap to 8. Having reached the turn with 22 points, a pair of back 9 double bogeys will have slightly disappointed him, but it will not be long before this rapidly improving player ‘hits the high spots’.

It was a close contest for 4th place between Barry Mulholland, 21, and Colin Ward, 18, on 39 points each. In the end Barry’s 13 points over the last six holes edged out Colin’s 12, with Colin having the very acceptable consolation of the middle section.

With Captain’s Day gone and a lot of the teams out, Club Captain Ian Cousins took advantage of the consequent reduction in formalities to record his best score of the year, 38 points off 10, to lift the low section. A birdie at the last boosted his back 9 tally to 19 points which were sufficient to fend off the challenge of six other players on 38 points.

The unlucky also-rans were Tom Douglas, 5, Paul Lyness, 7, Pat Burke, 7, Mark O’Neill, 11, Brian Robinson, 10, and Conor McDonald, 16. Just behind there were no fewer than 8 players on 37 points.

The high section went to the consistent Paul O’Shea with 36 points off 19. He had 20 points on the back 9 to leave Chris Stevenson, 28, and Ronnie Bruce, 26, unluckily empty handed. After a competitive tour of the four provinces, Peter Cummins has returned to domestic golf in spectacular fashion. On Wednesday he found himself 4 over at the turn but fired 5 birdies to lift the gross prize. On Saturday he was 3 over at the turn and shot four birdies coming home to lift the gross prize. There is just no stopping young Peter at the moment.
