Robin Jardine wins the Mervyn Guy Memorial

Mervyn was a much-loved member of the club and it is hard to believe that he passed away in March 2005. It seems like yesterday.

AJM Engineering sponsored the competition, thanks to the kinds auspices of Mervyn’s dear friend, John Molloy.

The golf course has taken a serious pounding from the weather recently but it still was playable and the level of scoring was excellent.

The calculated standard scratch was nett 67 or 38 stableford points.

This was equalled by Nigel Bryson (8), Mel Hylands (12), Seamus Rooney (7), John McCartan (26), Seamus McNally (15), Malcolm Russell (8), Matthew Mallon (5), Dennis Lockhart (13) and Quentin boyce (19).

A total of 21 players managed to break the standard scratch and they all deserve a mention.

Stephen Downey (20), Cecil Wilson (16) and Paul McAleavey (5) each had 39 points.

Stephen Downey was lucky enough to win the prize for the best second nine, 22 points.

Jim Gracey (11) David Thompson (15), Tom Mulholland (10), Sean McGreevey (18), John Redpath (12), Chris McAvoy (8), Philip McCourt (13) and Kieran McGreevey (21) all finished with 40 points. There were no prizewinners in this group but they should all be content after playing such a good round.

Layurence Bramall (13), Tom Fee (11), Gordon Enderson (25), Mark McCoy (8), Shane Bell (5) and Michael Beattie (18) were all in contention with scores of 41 points.

Shane Bell went round in 70 shots and he won the coveted best gross prize. Shane is the 17th low handicapper to win a best gross prize this season. There were 21 different winners last season.

Michael Beattie had 23 points for the first nine holes and he gets a prize for that performance.

Three players had 42 points, Sydney Pepper (11), Paul Downey (11) and David Luke (25).

Sydney got the prize for best senior player. He was over the moon as this was his best round of the season and he now qualifies for Champions Day on Saturday September 22.

Young Paul Downey took third prize and played himself onto the Carlingford Cup team. That was just perfect timing.

David Luke had his best chance ever to win a major. With three holes to play, he was in pole position. Those holes have caught out many a player and David was no exception. He dropped four shots and that dropped him into second place. It was still a brilliant result for David.

The winner of the Mervyn Guy Memorial Cup was Robin Jardine (21).

Robin got off to the worst possible start, taking 7 shots at the first hole. He settled down to play some marvellous golf. He had 41 points with two holes to play. Two bogeys would give him 45 points and certain victory. The pressure was on. Robin double bogeyed both 17 and 18 and his total was 43 points.

That score doesn’t always win but, much to Robin’s delight, it did this time. He won the cup and he deserves all our congratulations. His prize will be presented to him on Champions Day.
