Rockmount Captain attends Centenary celebrations

ROCKMOUNT Golf Club Captain Glenn Willis attended a special Centenary Dinner on Thursday January 10 as the Ulster Branch of the Golfing Union of Ireland celebrated its inauguration exactly one hundred years ago.

The event at Belfast City Hall had over three hundred and seventy attendees with representation from the Golfing Union of Ireland, all Ulster Branch Golf Clubs, other major sporting disciplines and the guest of honour the Captain of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Pierre Bechmann. The Lord Mayor Rt. Hon. Alderman Gavin Robinson welcomed the assembled to the City Hall. Following the Centenary Celebration Dinner there were speeches from Peter Sinclair, Chairman, Golfing Union of Ireland (Ulster Branch); Ivor McCandless, President Elect of the Golfing Union of Ireland and Pierre Bechmann Captain, Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. Gene Fitzpatrick provided some light entertainment to conclude what was a historic and memorable evening.

Week eleven of Rockmount Golf Club’s 2012/2013 Andrew Annett winter league competition, commenced on Saturday January 12. The weather was dull with a light persistent drizzle, however this could not prevent one outstanding score by Gavin Toman, (15), he scored 33 points over the twelve holes, a score that separated him by five shots from his nearest challengers. Gavin continued his good form having finished second last week, he made no mistake this week. Gavin recorded pars at each of the eleven holes and his only blemish (if you can call it a blemish) was his bogey four at the twelfth and last hole. Count back was needed to sort out, second and third both players having scored 28 points; Andrew Bill (16) was second and Leslie Anderson (12) was third. Six players scored 27 points with John McConnell (9) fourth and John Shepherd (24) fifth. The best gross of the day went to Ed McDonald (3) who scored a one over par 49. Ed recorded seven pars, two birdies and three bogeys on his card. The League scores have been updated; in league A, ‘Handcuffed to an Idiot’ 490, have leapfrogged over ‘Anything but Hockey’ who have 484; the gap between the two teams is 6 points a reverse of 9 points from last week. In league B, first and second have remained in the same positions ‘Oggie and the Sprinkler Heads’ have 505 and ‘This is Madness’ have 498. In league C, team ‘TBA’ have been matched by ‘Life without Brian’ both teams have 496. In league D, the runaway leaders ‘Frankly Awful’ have 500 and increased the gap (from 16 points to 17 points) on ‘Joseph’s Dream Team’ who have 483. The scores take into account the four dropped scores. In the singles competition’s (0-13) section; Andrew Mulholland has taken the outright lead with 164, second with 162 points is Mark Stewart points; in (13.1-18.5) section there are joint leaders Frank Wallace and Stephen Gilmore both with 167 points; in (18.6-28) section Richard Armstrong 164 and Peter Rowntree 163 have displaced Colin McClelland 156 and Frank McCourt 161 from first and second. Two weeks ago it was reported that Robert Patterson (proprietor) had won his first Turkey in seventeen years of trying: this was factually incorrect. On the date of the competition the competition prizes changed from Turkeys to Andrew Morris vouchers (unknown to the author of the report) which Robert subsequently received. Robert will next year ‘try’ to capture that elusive Turkey so that he and his family can enjoy a proper Christmas Turkey dinner! Weather permitting week twelve of the Andrew Annett winter league will commence on Saturday 19th January 2013. Sunday’s semi-open mixed competition was well supported, despite the cold conditions and the threat of snow. The scoring was exceptional with husband and wife pair Robert and Diane Patterson coming out on top with 26 points over nine holes; Robert and Diane completed the nine holes in a one under par gross score of 36 shots. Peter Loughins and playing partner Deidre Bones pushed them close and scored a very creditable 25 points to finish second.

The next semi-open mixed is on 10th February 2013.
