Rockmount hosts Captain’s open mixed competition

LAST Sunday saw the Captain’s open mixed competition held at Rockmount Golf Club.

After the glorious weather of the previous week Sunday was typical Irish weather; persistent rain and strong winds. Consequently the competition was reduced from eighteen holes to twelve holes as the wet suits can only take so much. Despite the rain and winds the scoring was high Gordon Goodfellow and Christine Martin took first place and the Captain’s Trophy with a six under par score of 30 points. Pushing them very close was Jim Madden and Heather Wedlock with 29 points. In third place was husband and wife duo Douglas and Jenny Bain. After the prize presentation all present were musically entertained by Noel Marsden.

The Jimmy Carroll Seniors four ball regional final was played at Edenmore Golf Club on Monday. Four clubs where vying for one place at the all Ireland final at Westmanstown Golf Club in Dublin. Bangor, Ballyclare, Cairndhu and Rockmount Captained by Frank Wallace began in bright sunshine. However the lights dimmed the scores through 9 became apparent with only Paddy Lawlor and Mark Kyle bettering 18 points. The back nine proved somewhat better with three of the four pairings improving, but having left so many shots on the front nine Rockmount were outgunned by the other teams. Andrew Mearns and Andrew Neagle scored 19 points for a total of 36 points, whilst Paddy and Mark scored 21 for a total of 41 points. Gavin Martin and John McGrath had a magnificent 22 points, for a total of 38 points whilst Ronnie Cole and Freddie Lloyd limped home with 15 points for a total of 33 points. With the best three cards counting the scores were not good enough and Bangor will be the Ulster representatives in Dublin. The players gave their all and are a credit to Rockmount Golf Club.

Saturday’s stable-ford competition sponsored by DCC Energy (EMO Oil) was particularly well supported. Twelve handicapper Sam Milligan played the eighteen holes in five over par for a score of 43 points and won by one point from Neil Dunlop (19) who scored 42 points. Sam had birdie two’s at the third and twelfth holes, seven bogies and nine pars on his card. Club Captain Peter O’Hara (8) won the low section (0-11) with 40 points. The middle section (11-17) was won by Kenny Craig (16) with 41 points and just to keep it in the family, the high section was won by Ciaran O’Hara (the Captain’s brother) with 38 points. Colin McClenaghan (2) won the gross with a magnificent level par 72. Colin’s round included a lost ball at the sixth hole, which was his only blemish on the card a bogey 6; he had a birdie two at the ninth and sixteen pars.

John Dickson captured the Robinson Trophy (for Junior’s). The competition for juniors is played over 36 holes and requires stamina and consistency. John Dickson and Ryan McConnell both finished on a two round total of nett 139 (five under par). John secured victory by virtue of a better second round score. In third place was Russell McDonald (142) and in 4th place was Conor Montgomery (144). The Captain Peter O’Hara thanked Janet Douds, Peter Rowntree and Alan McClune for organising and looking after this event before presenting John with his trophy.
