Rockmount team lose out on the Jimmy Bruen final

The Down Wholesale Scramble stableford competition at Rockmount on Saturday July 27 attracted a large field of competitors.

Playing in pairs with a quarter of the combined handicap, the scoring was exceptionally high. Out late in the afternoon Jonny Patterson and Adam Foreman with only an allowance of two shots amassed a grand total of 50 points. Their twelve under par gross score of 60 included one eagle, eleven birdies, five pars and a bogey. Three pairs scored forty seven points and positions were decided on count back. Colin McClenaghan and Simon Gray were second; Glenn McCreery and Warren Green were third and Warren Burnside and Ed Donaldson were fourth. On Sunday, the Junior Cowdy team hosted Royal County Down club for the return leg of their fourth round match having lost the away leg three one. Team Captain Tom Sloan was in no doubt the team could overturn the deficit and sent out a strong team. He wasn’t disappointed, his team performed admirably winning two and half of the first three points possible and enough holes to overturn the first leg result providing the last match could secure at least a half point. One down playing the eighteenth Robert Burns and Niall Marshall knew that a win at the last hole was the only option and they did not let Rockmount down, they won the hole and the Junior Cowdy team progress to the last eight.

On the same day the Jimmy Bruen team was in semi-final action, playing at the neutral venue Malone Golf Club against Tandragee Golf Club. With Team Captain Ronnie Cole unavailable, stand in Captain Paul Mearns sent out Francis Ward and Danny Montgomery first. Francis and Danny got off to a bad start, but fought hard to get back into the match before eventually succumbing to a three and two defeat. The second match was Ed Donaldson and Sam Milligan, who were beaten four and three. Out third was Ryan Wilson and Henry Moore, who earned a four and two win. Fourth out was Frank Wallace and Peter O’Hara. The last pair was Robert Patterson and Tom Rossi; Robert and Tom were always in control of their match and ran out three and two winners. The drama was in the match involving Frank and Peter, the score was two matches each with only this match left to finish. Always behind after the sixth hole, they fought back to take the match down the nineteenth. Frank’s putt was straight and true but did not drop and Tandragee progress to the final.
