Rossmore Cup team pull off shock victory

The Banbridge Rossmore Cup team, captained by Mel Hylands, completed what had looked an almost impossible turnaround to edge out Dungannon in the Rossmore Cup first round on Sunday.

They had lost at Dungannon by 3.5-0.5 and needed a clean sweep. That doesn’t happen too often but Mel’s men did it.

David Cherry and Richard Coburn started it off with a one up win, Joe Glass and Sherwin Curran followed it up three and one, Kevin McKay and Brian Grimes won by the same score and Fergie Cosgrove and PJ Johnston completed the comeback with a seven and six rout.

Banbridge will play either Lurgan or Ardglass in round two.

Banbridge’s Fred Daly team must be huge favourites to see off Bangor in round three after a rare 4-3 away victory.

Nigel Bryson, the juvenile convener, and Kieran Magennis, team manager had the players well prepared and it paid dividends.

Jonathan Brush won one up, Josh Crory won two and one, Jamie Thompson won two and one and Luke Crory won three and one. Patrick Magennis, Callum Barnes and Josh Lackhart lost out but Banbridge are certainly in the driving seat after a truly superb result. Nigel and Kieran couldn’t be more proud of their young team and will hope they can finish the job at Banbridge on Saturday.

ULSTER CUP

The Banbridge Ulster Cup team won five home matches to smash RCD.

Roy Simpson, Peter Hillen, Neil Comiskey, John Gallagher and Alan Caughey sealed the victory.

They play Mahee Island next.
