Ryan rips up the final five holes to win qualifier

Despite the holiday season being in full swing, over 200 golfers took part in the Mary Peters Trust qualifier at Dunmurry Golf Club.

The overall winner was early starter Ryan Patterson (21) with a superb 45 points.

A great start of three pars in the first three holes gave him nine points but it looked like he had blown his chances of victory picking up only two points in the next four holes.

Ryan then picked up eight points from his next two holes - a par four at the eighth and a birdie three at the ninth to give him 19 points on the front nine.

A par at the 10th followed by dropping shots at the next three holes gave him 28 points after 13 holes, but a tremendous finish of one under par for the last five holes saw him pick up 17 points and a winning total of 45 points.

Second place went to Michael Lamont (15), a winner earlier in the season, who keeps his good form going. Michael picked up five pars on the front nine at the second, third, fifth, seventh and eighth for 21 points.

On the back nine Michael birdied the 10th, and added further pars at the 13th, 16th, 17th, and 18th for 22 points and 43 in total. Michael also headed to the K Club with club professional John Dolan this week in the Lombard Trophy, a prize he won in March.

Third place went to past captain Mervyn Boyd (24). Mervyn used his shots went to pick 19 points on the front nine and 23 points on the back nine for a total of 42 points.

Three players returned 40 points - Duncan Fleming (6) picking up fourth spot thanks to better last six from John McManus (12), with John edging out Mike Thorpe (10) for fifth spot also on the better last six.

The gross prize went to Paddy McGlone (scr) thanks to an excellent 69, he went round the front nine in one over par 37. A back nine of three under par 32, thanks to birdies at 13th, 14th and 18th clinched him best gross score of the day.

TEAM NEWS

The Dunmurry, Belfast and District Cup side reached the semi-final of the competition thanks to a 6-1 home win over Belvoir last Sunday, and followed it up by winning two games in the return leg at Belvoir on Thursday 9th July.

They now play either Balmoral or Whitehead for a place in the final.

The Holt Shield team lost 3-2 at home to Whitehead in the first leg of a quarter final tie. They head to Whitehead this Sunday, aiming to overturn the deficit and progress to the semi-finals.
