Seconds deny Newry first win

BANN Seconds travelled to take on a Newry side who were still looking for their first points of the season.

Bann welcomed Ryan Bell and Ritchie McMullen into the squad with Jonny McKee unavailable.

The locals were slow out of the blocks and struggled to get up to speed with the slow pitch. Numerous long balls were intercepted by a resulute Newry side who tried to counter on a number of occasions and the Bann defence required to be on their guard.

Diarmid Reay started to get onto the ball and was linking well with Macko and Woods upfront who won the first short corner of the game but McCandless’s drag flick was well saved.

Newry playing with a high forward line managed to win their first short corner and converted with a strong strike past Mooney in the Bann goal.

Bann finally won another corner on the stroke of half time and McCandless made no mistake firing a strong drag flick past the Newry keeper.

Bann managed to gain some control in the second half and after McCraken found Macko in a wide position his ball into the circle was deflected past the Newry keeper by one of their own defenders.

Newry were finding their stride and managed to force several short corners which were blocked by the Bann first runner.

The game drifted from end to end with both sides finding it difficult to penetrate each others circle Bann managed to hold onto their slender lead and were lucky to take all three points.

Bann entertain Raphoe next Saturday at Havelock.
