Selfridge rounds off South African trip

CASTLEDAWSON golfer Chris Selfridge rounded off his recent stay in South Africa by tieing for 16th place in the Strokeplay Championship held at Western Cape.

The Moyola Park member carded a one under par 287 at the Oubaai Golf Club.

It proved a tough few days and on one occasion, he was on course for some five hours playing in very windy conditions.The week before he had tied for 21st place with a two under par for 286 when he represented Ireland at The Ten Nations Cup held on the Kingswood Golf Estate in George, also South Africa.

Selfridge now moves on to Spain to compete in the prestigious Amateur Open Championship from February 27th to March 3rd at the La Manga Golf Club in Cartagena,Murcia. A sophomore at Toledo University in Ohio, he will return to competition for the “Rockets” at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, North Carolina, on March 10th and 11th.He is currently the reigning Mid America Conference Freshman Of The Year and captured both the East of Ireland and Irish Amateur titles last Summer.

Chris is currently third in the Mid American Conference with a 71.8 stroke average and won his first collegiate title in UTs final event last Autumn at the Georgetown Intercollegiate.

A former pupil of St Pius X College, all in Castledawson also his club of Moyola Park, closely follow Chris Selfridge with his continuing exploits on the golf course. They join in wishing him every success and offer best of luck as he prepares for the Spanish Amateur
