Semi-final defeat in Fred Daly Plate

THE final stages of the Fred Daly Plate were played at Knock Golf Club on Sunday 23rd September.

Banbridge had played remarkable well to reach the semi-final where their opponents were Balmoral.

The local team had prepared meticulously, under the watchful eye of our local professional, Jason Greenaway.

But remembering all the advice in the teeth of battle isn’t an easy thing to do.

Luke Woods, the lowest handicapper on the team, led by example. Luke won the top game by 2 and 1.

Chris McAvoy was also in top form as he won his game by 3 and 2.

But, after that brilliant start, things began to unravel.

Josh Lockhart, all square after 12 holes, lost his way somewhat and he was beaten by 3 and 2.

Jonathan Brush was always up against it and he lost by 5 and 4.

Balmoral now had the upper hand and they finished off the match in fine style.

Scott Nelson lost 3 and 1 and, when Mark McCoy lost as well, it was all over.

Patrick Magennis, who was 2 up after 11 and could well have won, was called in.

It was disappointing, as defeat always is. But this young team from Banbridge did brilliantly to reach this stage and that should make them even more determined to go one step further next season.
