Senior Cup exit for Bann

THE Banbridge Senior Cup team came a cropper once again in the first round of the matchplay stage.

The match was played at Tandragee and Banbridge were up against a strong Lurgan team. Team captain, Connor Doran, wasn’t available to play and that was a major setback. Nevertheless, Lurgan were the superior team on the day.

Colin Wilton went out at number one and Brian Scullion beat him by the narrowest of margins, one hole up.

Jim Carvill walked into a whirlwind in the form of David Sutton. The Lurgan man was on fire and Jim had no answer. David won 6 and 5.

Rory Leonard raised hopes temporarily when he beat Gary Clarke 3 and 2. But it was a short-lived reprieve.

Gareth Moore comprehensively beat Jonathan Ward by 5 and 4. That was it all over.

Luke Woods was two down after 16 holes against Paul McCabrey when he was called in.

So the Senior cup has eluded Banbridge once again. Will this crop of players ever win it? We live in hope.

As for Lurgan, they lost in the second round to Warrenpoint.
