Sensational nett 59 means an ‘overdue’ cut for Frank

It was the first good Saturday this season and everyone was delighted. It was appropriate that the winning score should be “out of this world”.

Frank Mooney, a 23 handicapper, played the round of his life.

He went round in 82 shots, which gave him a sensational nett 59. There have only been a handful of 59’s in the history of the professional game and nett 59’s do not occur too often in the amateur game either.

Frank came to the final hole needing a par 3 for a nett 60. He hit a glorious 3-wood onto the putting surface and then holed out for that brilliant nett 59.

Frank’s handicap has been cut by 4 shots to 19, which seemingly is good news to his playing partners. According to Michael, John and Jim, it is long overdue.

Bunzi Catering Designs generously sponsored the competition thanks to the kind auspices of Gordon Enderson. They will see that Frank is suitably rewarded.

The runner-up was Aaron Buchanan (17 now 15) with a nett 62.

Aaron has been in great form recently, coming third in last Thursday’s Open.

He didn’t start too well on Saturday and he was 8 over par after 6 holes. He then shot no less than 11 pars over the remaining 12 holes. That was fantastic golf.

Ian Craven (17 now 15) was third with a nett 62.

Morris Phillips (15) won the prize for the best senior player wit a nett 63.

He beat Sydney Pepper (13) on countback. Morris had a very tidy scorecard, not one double bogey and a lovely birdie at the 14th.

The best gross prize once again went to Rory Madeley (4) with a one over par 70.

He plays a lot of golf, does our Rory and he never seems to play badly.

Spare a thought for Sydney Pepper, Roland Harwood and Malcolm Russell who all shot nett 63’s and walked away empty-handed. On many another day, they could well have won the competition.

But the plaudits belong this time to Frank Mooney and his nett 59. Will we see another score as good as that this year?
