Shaw hopes to findform at Fota Island

Lurgan golfer Gareth Shaw goes into the Irish Open at Fota Island, Cork today (Thursday) hoping to find the form that saw him finish joint fifth last year.

The 27-year-old shot a final round 69 at Carton House to earn over 60,000 euros, his biggest pay cheque since turning pro. His reward for four great rounds in Dublin last year was an invite to the French Open.

“My season has been poor so far,” said Gareth during a break from his practice rounds.

“I am just not hitting enough quality shots and my putting has been average. So far it seems that in each event something major has let me down, whether that be putting, driving, short game or irons.

“But hopefully this week is different. My game is starting to feel better and I like the course here. It is very fair in general and in great conditions.

“After last year there is the added expectation, but I feel less pressure as I know I am good enough to do that again. That belief at this level is massive.

Gareth only heard the news earlier this week that he would be playing at the Irish Open and tweeted: ‘Just got an invite to play in this years Irish Open at Fota. I need accommodation and a caddy’.

Gareth is out at 9.30am on Thursday with Jason Knutzon and Sihwan Kim. A solid start will help him make the cut and be involved over the final two days.
