Single point victory for Nigel at Raceview

Nigel Thompson had a single point victory in the McCurdy Fuels-sponsored stableford competition at Ballymena Golf Club recently.

Thirteen-handicapper Thompson parred six of the opening nine holes, with dropped shots at the second and sixth and a double concession on the par four fifth, as he reached the turn with 20 points on his card.

The second nine holes produced five pars and four bogeys as he added another 21 points to his total, making 41 points overall.

Second nett was Michael Smyth (5) with 40 points from his round of one over par gross.

His first nine holes produced 19 points, from six pars, bogeys on the first and sixth, one of which he retrieved with a birdie on the par five ninth.

The back nine was played in level par with five pars, bogeys at 11 and 14 which he recovered with birdies at the 16th and 17th en route to 21 points for the nine holes.

Third nett prize went to Raymond Scullion (15) also with 40 points only to lose out to Smyth over the second nine holes.

Raymond’s outward nine was made up of five pars and four bogeys which equated to 21 points, while the inward nine saw him notch three pars only to drop seven shots across the other six holes as he added 19 points to his tally.

Fourth prize winner was Thomas Surgenor (14) with 39 points and on a better second nine total from WAH Montgomery and Harry McGarry.

Surgenor’s two nines were in complete contrast with a mediocre 15 points from the front nine but he certainly hit form on the way back with four pars, three bogeys and he also hit birdies at the 14th and 18th holes as he recorded 24 points for the nine holes, which he played in one over gross.

Montgomery claimed the fifth prize, also with 39 points and on a better last six hole total of 11 to McGarry’s 10.

He won’t have been pleased with a non-event on the par five third, yet he had seven pars plus a bogey at the second which totalled 21 points for the first nine holes.

The second nine resulted in him playing to his handicap, being six over with pars at the 11th, 13th and 18th.

The final nett prize went to Harry McGarry (10) who also had 39 points, only to miss out over the final six holes.

Harry embarked on his round with four pars and then added three bogeys, a birdie at the sixth and another par for 21 points.

The second nine started well with three pars from the first four holes but the final six holes saw him drop five shots, despite a birdie at the final hole.

Gary Black (1) remained on the best gross trail as he played the course in three over par.

An outward nine of six pars plus a trio of bogeys was added to on the inward nine where he recorded seven pars, a bogey at 11 which he retrieved with a birdie on the final hole.
