SLIDESHOW: Ballymena Golf Club Captain’s Day

Having clocked on at 7am, the 17-handicapper scored equal nines of 21 points as he established a lead which held firm for the remainder of the day.

In the end, he finished one point ahead of four returns of 41 points.

Paul’s front nine holes contained four pars and five bogeys. The back nine saw him again score four pars but this time with four bogeys and a double bogey at the 12th, again giving him 21 points.

Runner-up was Ian Lecky, playing off a handicap of 14, who returned 41 points, with a better back nine score giving him the verdict over three other similar totals.

Ian scored five pars and four bogeys for 21 points on the way out, while the second nine resulted in four pars and five bogeys but a par at the final hole proved to be rewarding.

Third nett prize went to John Kennedy (17) who notched up 22 points on the first nine, despite a non-score on the sixth.

The other eight holes produced four pars, birdies on the first and fourth, a bogey on the second plus he double-bogeyed the par five third.

In the second nine he scored just one par plus six bogeys and he also had a non-score on the par four 17th but he still managed to score 19 points on the nine holes, helped by a birdie on the 13th.

John’s second nine was two points over the last six holes from Steven Bell, who was one point better than WKJ Herbison, who had to settle for fifth nett prize after all three finished with 40 points.

Bell, with a handicap of 21, scored 22 points on the outward nine holes with six bogeys and three pars whereas the inward nine contained three pars, three bogeys, two double bogeys and the 17th was costly as he failed to score.

Herbison (19) won the fifth nett prize with a total of 41 and he also joined the unwanted list of players who failed to score any points at the 17th.

Ken had a superb opening nine holes where he scored five pars plus four bogeys for a total of 23 points. The closing nine resulted in a trio of pars and single bogeys plus double bogeys on the 11th and 13th as well as that non-event at 17 but he managed 18 points.

The final nett prize went to Brian Dempster who, with a handicap of one shot per hole, scored equal nines of 20 points. In total, Brian scored eight pars, six bogeys and four double bogeys.

Four-handicapper Steven Smyth took the best gross honours with a round of three over 71 shots. A front nine of eight pars was spoiled by two shots being dropped on the par three second, whereas the back nine was made up of six pars, two bogeys and a birdie on the 15th.

The second gross prize was won by one-handicapper Gary Black who also played the course in three over par, only to lose out over the last six holes on the back nine.

Gary scored 13 pars, four bogeys and he birdied the 13th.

The past captains’ prize was won by Fred Dawson (6) who posted a total of 39 points, of which 23 came from the first nine.

He commenced his round birdie, birdie, par, birdie and went on to score four pars, only to drop a shot on the par five ninth.

The second nine resulted in five pars, dropped shots on the 10th, 15th and 17th plus he double bogeyed the 13th, leaving him with 16 points for the nine holes.

The veterans’ prize was won by Ivan McMaster (16) with a total of 39 points.

The Council prize was won by William AH Montgomery (12) with 38 points; nearest the pin on the seventh was Seamus O’Boyle; and the longest drive on the 18th came from Adam Heron.

The Ramsey Cup for putting was won by Adam Barr with a score of minus nine.

The visitors’ prize was won by Hugo Hunter with a score of 32 points.

The winners of the various prizes in the ladies’ section were: overall winner - Denise Harper 42 points; ladies’ gross - Jill Black 22 gross points; Section A - Eileen Hudson 32 points; Section B - Sandra Lennox 34 points; Section C - Madeleine McIlroy 36 points.

O’KANE CUP

Stephen Campbell had enough left from Captain’s Day on the Saturday to come up number one the next day in the O’Kane Cup.

He returned a total of 39 stableford points to finish a point ahead of David Black and John Hood.

Twelve handicapper Campbell opened his round with a par, bogey followed by five pars and he completed his front nine with two bogeys for 21 points.

He went on to play the back nine to his handicap with three pars and six bogeys on the other holes for 18 points.

Second place went to Black (13) who scored 38 points and on a better second nine from Hood (24).

The best gross card came from six-handicapper David Smith with 73 shots.
