Smyth victorious at Redcastle

REDCASTLE Ladies held their Third Committee (Stroke) competition on Monday, with Una Smyth (25) claiming first place when she finished with nett 72, second was Nuala McQuaid (25) who finished with nett 73 and third Oonagh McDermott (22) who scored nett 74 was third.

Next Monday's competition is the Bank of Ireland Cup and the draw times are as follows: 10am, 5pm and 5.45pm.

While Redcastle's Kelvin Shields took full advantage of glorious conditions on Saturday morning last, to build the platform which would result in victory in Mr. Ivor Browne's Captain Prize.

A glorious summer morning saw an excellent turnout at Mr. Browne's "big day" and while Kelvin dominated the morning starters with a healthy front nine score, he held his nerve to return a total of 43 points.

However, the eventual winner didn't have it all his own way as the big hitting Cathal Donnelly successfully found all 18 fairways but his effort at a 30 feet putt on the last saw the ball 'lip out,' forcing him to settle with 43 points but losing out on a tie-break with the winner.

Third was Kevin McQuaid who scored 42 points and Mervyn Baird with 41 points was fourth, while Raymond McQuaid with 31 gross points won the gross prize.

The front nine, was also settled after a break of tie finish went to Terry Green after he scored 21 points, the back nine was claimed after a BOT finish by Paddy McSheffrey, after he scored 20 points; the past captain prize went to Mark Wilson after he scored 37 points the committee prize was claimed by Danny Carlin after he scored 36 points and the visitor was also secured after a BOT finish went to Conleith Murphy.

In the ladies section Gena Porter with 21 points came out on top with second spot going to Rosie Agnew after she scored 20 points.

At the well attended Captain's night celebrations, Kelvin proved a highly popular winner and, indeed, received a standing ovation from members.
