Solid display by Hepburn’s team

SIX handicapper Graham Hepburn certainly led by example as he captained the winning team in the W & J Chambers (Concrete) Team event at Prehen on Sunday.

Playing along with Vincent Devenney (10), Brian Burns (17) and Portsalon member Gerry Kindlon (21) Graham came in on 14 of the holes played, a truly remarkable achievement. With the best two scores at each hole counting they scored a total of 92 points for a tie breaking victory over the runners up led by the redoubtable Tony McDermott (12), Rob Jefferson (12), James Harrigan (16) and Denis O’Connell (20).

Third place was taken by the team led by Kevin Quigg (3), Stephen McKeegan (5), John Gallagher (18) and Maurice Quigg (19) who scored a commendable 91 points.

Prehen members are advised that Prize giving for the following competitions: June, August, September, Monthly Medals, Northern Bank Open, Foyle Search and Rescue Open, Samaritans Open, O’Doherty Brother’s Open, Jock Balmer Fourball and the Taylormade match play finals will take place at 5.30pm on Saturday and the W and J Chambers (Concrete) Team Classic takes place on Sunday.

While Paul Monaghan (20) was last to finish his round in the September Centenary Monthly Medal at Prehen on Saturday but when the cards were checked the biblical warning ‘the last shall be first’ was proved once again and he duly came out on top with a fabulous 43 points, just one point clear of silver medallist Martin McNulty (10).

Incidentally both players recorded nines of 24 points with Martin’s s first nine and Paul’s second nine yielding that figure. Kevin Quigg (4) took the bronze medal and the best gross of the day with 41 points on a tie break.

While Gary Brown (11) followed his recent Am-Am team win at Prehen with another victory, this time in the weekly Thursday Open to show that he can fly solo when necessary.

His 41 points winning total (23 of them on the front nine) gave him a three shot margin over second placed Pat Logue (24). Pat actually matched his handicap in points on the second nine. Stuart McClelland (9) took third place on 38 points losing out to Pat on a count back.
