Sound round for Franklifts midweek sweep

The men’s midweek sweep was for the Brian Archer Memorial trophy. A good entry of 126 took part, there were more golfers under par than in recent competitions with 19 posting under par returns.

The top return was 42 points and the victor was veteran 15 handicapper Frank Murray who played soundly on both nines with double bogeys on holes six and thirteen his only distractions. A few early pars at holes one, four and five got the show started. He followed it with a nice run of pars at holes seven, eight, nine, ten and twelve. He rounded off the day with a trio of pars at holes fifteen, sixteen and eighteen. This delightful play put him two points clear of the field.

Denis McInerney was runner-up with his return of 40 points helped by birdies at holes one, four, seven and ten. Bogeys on holes three and six did not cause him any major hiccups. A run of pars from the fifteenth to the finish concluded the rest of his round. Sparring partner Gerard Henderson was third overall with the best score of 39 points. Big hitting Tom Douglas powered his way to a similar total of 39 points to gather fourth place.

The fifth and final net prize went to Ben McKnight also with 39 points. Young Michael McSherry captured the gross prize with 35 gross points. Early in the round he bagged birdies at holes one and four. Later he fell foul of bogeys on holes five, six, thirteen and fourteen. More importantly par figures on the rest of the holes secured him the category prize.
