Sports Trust win for Steve

Steve Macauley hit a remarkable 46 points on the Strand Course at Portstewart to win the Ulster Sports Trust event.

The thirteen handicapper was two under par for the opening nine holes thanks, in part, to an eagle two at the par four second which gave up five points to the card. After nine Steve had 24 points lodged and kept up the good work into the return nine birdying the long thirteenth and dropping in another two, a regular one this time, at the short fifteenth. 21 points were gained and the great 46 total signed for.

Steve had three points to spare over the runner up, Karl Ross who carded 43. The seventeen handicapper scored 21 points out, a two at the short sixth levelling up the blank at the second. Karl scored at all holes on the inward nine including a birdie four at fourteen. The Low Section topper was Alastair Glenn with 42 points on the card. An opening birdie three got things off well and he added a two at the sixth to get 22 points for the nine.

A blip at the thirteenth got Alastair no points at all but he dropped in another two at fifteen to make up for that and finished with a flourish by birdying the last for another 20 points. The High Section prize went to Jim Hardy for his 41 total. The three opening holes gave Jim just four points but the birdie at five gave up four and got the card back on track. Jim ran out the opening nine with 21 points to his credit.

The back nine gave no further birdie to Jim but he scored steadily to get 20 points for 41 overall. Stephen Garrett took the best gross prize for his effort of 69. A shot slipped away at the second but birdies at the par five fourth and the short sixth got him to the turn in one under par 35. After a few bogeys early in the back nine Stephen came to life again and birdied four of the last five to get back in 34, two under par for it and three under for the eighteen.
