Stephen leads his team to Winter League success

The victorious team in Portstewart’s Winter League was manfully led by Stephen Garrett.

He led from the front with only Stephen Henry, out of the eight men team, outscoring him. 38 points from Stephen Henry and 36 from Aldo Morelli were the best individual efforts over the eight week sequence so it shows how consistent the scoring was from other team members, Paul Garrett, Mark Hamilton and Desi Ballantine. Geoff Walls and Mark Windebank did their bit as well with Geoff matching his captain’s score and Mark just six points back.

Ron Black, Frank Scullion, Robert Murphy and Gary Todd formed the top half of the runners up team, ably assisted by Danny Alexander, Eamon Cassley and the Cameron brothers. They scored just two points less than the winners with Danny Alexander, with 235 points, coming out as top scorer from both teams. Fourteen points further back was Gerry Hasson’s group on 1360. As befits a natural leader Gerry himself was their leading scorer on 234.

In the individual section Philip Caskey took the honours with a great total of 248 from his six counting cards, an average of over 35 each. This was achieved with the help of his team members who, seeing Philip going so well, stepped back from the limelight to take any pressure from the team event off him. This was so effective the team came last, even with the top scorer in it!
