Stirling ‘sweeps’ to victory at Galgorm Castle

Now that the clock has changed and the evenings close in earlier, changes have been made to playing at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

Sweep Competitions are played over nine holes with a reduced player handicap.

There was a close and exciting finish to Division 1 with only one point separating seven players.

Through the Maple George Watt (5) was one point ahead of Owen Smith (2) who in turn was another point ahead of Adrian Atkinson (5). Alan Goodrich (1) and Willie Park (5) were a further point behind with David Stirling jnr. (2) and Joshua Hill (6)another point down.

Watt lost his lead when he failed to register up the Grove. Atkinson and Smith took advantage of this slip to take a one point lead over Goodrich, Stirling jnr and Hill followed by Park and Watt another point away.

Smith lost his chance of winning when he failed to score at the last. Atkinson finished with two bogeys and was joined by Stirling jnr (two pars) and Goodrich (two pars).

First place went to Stirling jnr with Atkinson taking second place. Goodrich won the Gross. Smith (par, -), Hill (two bogeys), Watt (bogey, par) and Park (bogey, par) finished together and with a better last six third place went to Hill.

Division 2 had almost aqs an exciting finish as the previous Division but with one less player. Approaching the fourteenth tee Robert Topping (8) was leading by a point from Graham Simms (7) and Timothy D’Arcy (8). Another point behind came Robert Graham (7) and Richard Lennox (8) (‘ding’ at twelve) with Des Cousley (8) a further point behind.

Through the Grove, Simms and Graham had taken over at the front by one point from Topping and Cousley. Another point behind came Lennox and D’Arcy.

Simms continued his late progress and finished wqith two pars to win by one point from Robert Graham (par, bogey) with D’Arcy (bogey, par), Topping (two bogeys), Lennox (bogey, par) and Cousley (double bogey, bogey) vying for third place and with a better last three third place went to Rochard Lennox. Topping won the Seniors.

In Division 3 Samuel Graham (10) was two points ahead of Keith Dinsmore (9), Samuel MacDonald (11) and John Caulfield (9) after four. Graham continued to lead and was still two points in front of Dinsmore with two to play. Two points further back came MacDonald and Caulfield.

Samuel Graham who had led after the first hole continued to lead and came home bogey, bogey to win by two points from Dinsmore (two bogeys) with MacDonald (bogey, double bogey) and Caulfield (bogey, double bogey) finishing together two points further behind and third place went to MacDonald.

Twos were recorded by – G.Beckington; C.Steele; D.Stirling jnr; R.Topping and R.Graham.

FRONT NINE

In a close finish, Jackson Minford (9) had a better last three holes score from James Mairs (5).
