Successful Open Week at Edenmore

Edenmore’s Open Week Competition was welcomed back by both local golfers and those from far afield.

With over 600 competitors and as many as 27 twos throughout the week, it made for an impressive week’s golfing.

Prizes worth over £1200 were generously donated by number of local sponsors.

The club also put on a golf taster event to encourage those interested in taking up the sport to give it a go. The Professional team along with the General Manager lead out three workshops on pitching, putting and the long game. Leading on from the event they have planned a series of drop-in clinics, every Thursday evening in September from 6-7pm at a cost of £5 per person. No equipment is required.

The Men’s & Ladies Open Stableford on Monday August 18 was sponsored by Calor. Competition was tightly contested at the top of the leader board with the 4 handicapper Josh Logan the eventual winner with a score of 40 points, (71). Second, beaten on the count back was Mannan Castle’s Stephen McGarvey also with 40 points. Ryan Chambers from Lisburn finished 1 point further back with a solid score of 39 points.

Edenmore member Sean McCabe used the course knowledge to his advantage by picking up Nearest the Pin on the short 14th Hole with a shot to just 11 feet 5 inches.

Claiming first in the Ladies Competition was fellow Edenmore member Karen Legrand with a score of 33 points playing off a handicap of 21. Following in second place was her playing partner Stephanie Watson with 30 points.

Prize places for the Men’s Open Stableford sponsored by Johnsons Coffee were dominated by Edenmore members with particular congratulations to young member Robert Norton playing off a handicap 11 as runaway winner with a fantastic score of 44 points. He was closely followed by fellow member Ivan Donaghy with an excellent score of 42 points, playing off a handicap 15. Third place was Lee McClintock finishing 1 shot further back with a good score of 41 points.

Gross prizes were also dominated by Edenmore members with 4 handicapper Paddy Agnew claiming first place with a steady score of 74 (+3). He was followed by Monday’s overall winner Mark Reilly who shot a 75 (+4).

Nearest the Pin prize on the short Par 3 14th Hole was picked up by Edenmore’s Rodger Erwin playing off a handicap of 7. Rodger hit a great shot in to just 7 feet 4 inches.

Friday August 22: Men’s & Ladies Open Stableford sponsored by NFU Mutual - The White Tee markers were placed back to add a bit more length to the course and the pins were tucked away in difficult positions to make for a competitive days golfing. The eventual winner on the count back was Lurgan Golf Club’s Andrew Graham with an impressive score of 40 points playing off a handicap of 17. He was followed by two Edenmore members; firstly, Sheldon Lyttle also with 40 points playing off a handicap of 13 and Kevin Walsh finishing 1 shot further back on 39 points playing off a handicap of 16.

Nearest the Pin played on the difficult 14th Hole was won by Stephen Carse with a fantastic shot played to 6 feet 5 inches.

Sunday August 24: Men’s & Ladies Open Stableford sponsored by Comco Plastics. It was a leader board dominated by Edenmore Club members and topped by early starter Geoff Burrows winning by an impressive 4 shots on 43 points. Jason Tandy finished on a great score of 39 points with Keith Hare finishing 1 shot further back on 38 points.

The best gross score on the day was a modest 76 (+5) by newcomer to Edenmore and early starter Ian Ross.

Ian Ross was narrowly piped to the Longest Drive on the 5th hole by Graham McIlroy who only left himself a wedge to the long Par 4. Nearest the Pin on the tricky 14th Hole was Lisburn Golf Club member Robbie Hamilton hitting a great shot in to just 7 feet 5 inches.

Claiming first place in the Ladies section was visitor Katie Russell from Belvoir Park with a great score of 38 points off a handicap of 38. 4 shots further back of that on 34 points playing off a handicap of 25 was Lady member Sally Cushnahan.

Winning the Non Handicaps prize on the day was Richard Megarity on 32 points.
