Super score wins Bann Champions Day for Aidy

It was Champions Day at Banbridge Golf Club last Saturday. It was appropriate that the competition should be won with the best score of the season.

Aidy McEvoy, playing off a handicap of 17, went round in 4 over par gross 73, nett 56. That gave Aidy a marvellous score of 49 stableford points. He won by 4 points.

This is a wonderful score but it is not the best ever.

Shannon Drainey, in the Yess Electrical competition in 2012 had 50 points, nett 55.

Back in 1999, Richard Longmore (13) won the Rover Cup with a nett 54.

But the all-time record still belongs to Gareth Moorhead (19), who, back in October 2003, shot a nett 52 and scored 53 points.

These are mind-boggling scores and Aidy is there amongst them.

Rory McMullan (15) was the runner-up on Champions Day with 45 points. That score would win most Saturdays.

Richard Coburn (12) won the low section with 42 points. Callum Barnes (8) was second, also with 42 points.

Joe Glass (14) won the middle section with 41 points. At last, Joe has got the hang of playing well on Saturday. Roy Rankin (17) was second with 40 points.

Lee Willdridge (19) won the high section with 42 points. Robin Jardine (22) was second with 39 points.

Rory Leonard (+1) won the best gross with a 3 under par 66. He is in good form with the All-Ireland Senior Cup finals coming up this weekend.

Carson Clegg (18) won the prize for best senior with 41 points.

Jonathan Shannon won the Champion of Champions Trophy. This goes to the best score by a major winner this season. Jonathan, who qualified by winning the Coburn Cup, had 41 points.

There was, as always, a few hard luck stories. Eugene Weir was round in level par 69 for 42 points. Sydney Pepper, John Gallagher, Jonathan Ward and Cecil Wilson all had 40 points. And all went home empty-handed.

But the man of the moment is certainly Aidy McEvoy. His nett 56 will be talked about for some time.

Foursomes win for David and Jamie

The annual Parent and Child Foursomes competition was held last Sunday.

The winners were David and Jamie Thompson with 24 points. Donald and Matthew Doyle were the runners-up with 24 points.
