Sweep and Winter League at Galgorm

In Division 1 Philip Galloway (5) who was joint leader with Daniel Reilly (1) through the three surrendered his position after failing to score at the next leaving Reilly a point ahead of Owen Smith (3) and Colin Steele (2) followed by Mark Hamilton (4) and Galloway another point behind.

A new leader emerged with two to play with Steele after two pars and a birdie taking a one point lead over Reilly and with three pars Galloway recovered to join Reilly. Hamilton and Smith were still in contention another point behind.

In a thrilling finish Reilly with a par and an eagle came home to win by one point. Steele (two pars); Galloway (two pars); Hamilton (par, birdie) and Smith (birdie, par) all finished together. Hamilton with a better last one took second place with Smith (better last six) in third place. Steele won the Gross.

In Division 2 after four Michael McAuley (6) who opened strongly with the help of two birdies took a one point advantage over Raymond Ardis (6) who started with four pars. Another one and two points behind came Norman Nicholl (5) and Hugh Moore (6) respectively.

Through seven Ardis and Nicholl had joined McAuley at the front with Moore two points behind. Ardis (bogey, par) and Nicholl (two pars) finished together and with a better last one Ardis took first place with Nicholl second. A point behind in third place came McAuley (double bogey, par).

Through the Niuc in Division 3 Michael Burton (10) who opened with a bogey and three pars was leading – a lead which he held to the finish – James Gillespie (8) and James McClintrock (9) by two points. Keith Dinsmore (9), David Millar (8) and William Kennedy (9) were another point behind.

Burton maintained his two point advantage over Gillespie and McClintock who were joined by Dinsmore and Kennedey through seven with Millar a further point down. Burton with a bogey, par finish held on to win by one point from Gillespie (two pars) with Dinsmore (par, bogey) third.

Seamus Laverty (10) and James Campbell (13) were vying for the lead after four in Division 4. Hugh Mussen (12) and Robert Barkley (11) (‘ding’ at the Niuc) were three points adrift of the leaders. With two holes remaining Laverty with the help of a birdie at the par three fifth moved into a one point lead from Campbell and a vastly improved Barkley with two pars and a birdie. Mussen was another four points down.

A par, bogey finish by Laverty saw him home to win by one point from Campbell. Barkley was unable to sustain his effort over the closing holes when he ran into bogey trouble and was joined by an improving Mussen albeit four points behind Campbell. Mussen with a better last three took third place.
