Team 24 claim top spot

THE QUARTET of Mark Doherty (21), Jim McFadden (12), Ciaran O’Doherty (12) and Dermot Harkin (17) claimed the coveted 2012 Desmond Motors Winter League title at Foyle on Saturday when returning an excellent score of 100 points.

Representing Team 24, they finished Saturday’s final stage of the competition with a slender two points winning margin over Team 21 who consisted of Joe Doran (12), Ciaran O’Hagan (16), Matt Donnell (9) and Leo Young (23) who finished on 98 points.

The overall scoring on the day was of the same high standard as was witnessed during the competitive qualifying rounds as the top eight teams competed for the four prizes on offer.

Final standings were as follows: First - Team 24 - Mark Doherty (21), Jim McFadden (12), Ciaran O’Doherty (12) and Dermott Harkin (17) 100 points; Second - Team 21 - Joe Doran (12), Ciaran O’Hagan (16), Matt Donnell (9) and Leo Young (23) 98 points; Third - Team 3 - Ciaran Gillen (19), John Morison (16), Scott Kennedy (7) and Ryan Gillen (20) 96 points; Fourth - Team 26 - Kieran Bradley (13), Martin Loughrey (11), Joe Bradley (20) and Marty Breslin (12) 93 point.

Everyone at Foyle are deeply indebted to Desmond Motors for their continued and generous sponsorship of the League over the past 13 years.

A special word of thanks must go to the Competition Co-ordinator, Gerry Coyle for a job well done.

The club would also like to thank Robert and the staff in the shop for their efficient work with tee times etc. and also the green keepers for the fine condition of the course during the event.

The dinner and prize presentation is scheduled for Friday, January 18, 2013.

While Foyle Sunday Society Members turned out in force on Sunday last for the Christmas Hamper competition.

The Ballyarnett course was in fine condition and after all the inclement weather Sean McEleney (23) was the overall winner with a very good score of 42 points.

The category 0-11 went to Gary McElroy (7) after he scored 39 points, the category 12-17 was claimed after a break of tie finish by John Logue (17) 40 points and the category 18+ was won by Paddy McCafferty (21) 40 points.

The back nine went to Paul McEleney (10) after he scored 21 points and Frank Doherty (12) with 22 points won the front nine, nearest the pin was Sean Rankin and Richard McRory hit the longest drive.

The Foyle Sunday Society continues at the weekend and the Turkey competitions are daily.
