Ulster’s top juvenile trophies

A total of 15 juvenile teams competed in the Mahaffy Shield at Banbridge last Wednesday.

This is one of the premier juvenile inter-club golf tournaments in Ulster and it continues to grow in popularity.

Christian Kennedy, a 4 handicapper from Lisburn, was 5 under par gross after 14 holes and he enquired what the course record was. Christian won the best gross prize with a 66, a few shots off the record.

Jamie Fletcher, a 3 handicapper from Warrenpoint, had the second best gross with a 71. Jonathan Brush from Banbridge, playing off 10, won the best nett prize with a nett 62. Rory McMullan (18), another promising golfer from Banbridge, won the second best nett prize with a nett 63. Josh Lockhart won the two spot prizes for the longest drive and nearest the hole.

Those scores are all fantastic but the Mahaffy Shield is a team event first and foremost.

The fourth best team was Edenmore with a 5-card total of 345. Their two best players were Brian Houston and Josh Norton, both with nett 66.

The third best team was Balmoral, also with a team total of 345. Three of their team finished with nett 67’s, namely Aidan Finnegan, Michael McNulty and Joe Tully.

The Banbridge B team took second place and they too had a team total of 345. They looked like certain winners when their first four scores came in. Chrissy Burns had a nett 64, Jamie Thompson a nett 65, Gary McConville a nett 66 and Scott Nelson a nett 69. They needed one more low score from either Neil Cherry or Andrew Bennington.

The winners were the Banbridge A team who all played consistent golf.

Their team total was 333 thanks to a nett 62 from Jonathan Brush, a nett 66 from Michael Young, a nett 67 from Josh Lockhart, a nett 68 from Callum Barnes and a nett 70 from Patrick Magennis. Team captain, Luke Woods, was happy enough that his nett 73 was not required.
