The latest from Dunmurry Golf Club

COLIN Power shot a stunning one under par 69, last Saturday at Dunmurry Golf Club, to capture the Mary Peter’s Trust Trophy.

The five-handicapper put on a putting master class, to score 42 points, to win by two from Arnold Thom.

Colin opened with two pars, before securing back to back birdies at the third and fourth, to move swiftly under the card.

He put together a run of pars to the turn, with his only blemish coming at the sixth, were he made bogey. The one under par helped him to 22 points over the front nine holes.

A birdie at the tenth saw him off and running again, and, after another birdie at the short par four, 14th, he crossed the road at three under par.

He was to give two shots back at the difficult 15th, after making an ugly double bogey six, but held his nerve to record three final pars, coming home in level par, and 20 points for the back nine.
That gave him a one under par score line, and an unassailable 42 points.

Arnold Thom (23) kept his fine form going, for a second successive week, to take second place with a 40 point total.

He made steady progress over the front nine, amassing 21 points, with the highlights being pars at the difficult sixth and eighth holes.

Two double bogeys at the start of his back nine, threatened to halt his progress, but pars at 14, 15 and 17, saw him needing only a bogey five to secure the win.

Sadly Arnold ran up a nasty triple bogey seven, to leave him two shots off the pace on 40 points, but still a fine effort by the high handicapper.

Another high handicap golfer took third as Stephen Holdsworth (25) racked up 39 points, to edge out Tom Snoddon (11) on the better back nine, after he too shot 39 points.
Junior Cup golfer, Ian Farr (5) took the gross prize, with a four over par 74.

Ian bogeyed the second, sixth and seventh, going out in three over par 38, before adding a fourth bogey at the 11th.

He finally made his first birdie of the day, at the fourteenth, but dropped two strokes at the very next hole, the 15th.

He rallied to birdie the 16th, and two final pars, gave him a one over par 36 on the back nine, and a 74 total.

Also on the team were Peter Morgan, Jarlath McCotter, Dan Turley, Chris Black, Ryan Trimble and Niall McReynolds.

The Holt Shield team had an equally impressive result, in their home tie, with Mahee Island.

There were debut wins for Aaron O’Rorke and Gareth Shirlow, to go along with the successes by Shane McCotter, Ward Orr and Andrew Cochrane. They travel to Clandeboye in a fortnight’s time.
