The mighty Quigg triumphs again

A FANTASTIC Open Week at Prehen closed on Sunday with the running of the 28th Northlands Centre Open Stableford. Organised by club stalwarts and dedicated Northlands supporters, Maurice and Carole Quigg, the event again enjoyed fabulous sunshine, a large turnout and spectacular scoring.

By the end of the day, with family pride at stake, it was Sean Quigg (2) with a brilliant two points, and the day's Best Gross, who topped the field. Sean was seven under par for his weekend's golf and rumours abounded at the well attended prize giving that Sean's next piece of joinery would be to the European Tour!

In second place, with a vintage performance, was Ciaran Burke (9) with 41 points. Council member Jim O'Hagan (19) saw his 41 points, posted early in the morning beaten into third place by virtue of Ciaran's better back nine. Jim will no doubt be pleased when he sees his new handicap that sees him at a new low.

Fourth place went to the big hitting Lester Moore (2) with a fine 41 points. Adrian Lecky (6) grabbed the front nine prize with 21 points and Dr Alan Wade (23) stormed back from a first nine mire to capture the back nine with a scintillating 24 points that was enough to send his playing partners running for oxygen.

In the ladies section it was a mixture of youth and grace that fought out the major prizes. Rachael Chambers (8) showed just why she is such a great golfing prospect with a marvellous 40 point tally to top the leaderboard.

Newly elected Council member Betty McBride (16) laid aside the cares of office and concentrated on cooking a great 37 points to take second place.

Naoimh Quigg (2) strove to match brother Sean's performance but found her 37 points only good enough for third place by virtue of Betty better back nine. Anne Wallace (17) with 20 poinst lifted the first nine prize and Ester Milligan (20) took the second nine.

In his closing remarks City of Derry Captain, Brian Abel, complimented the Quigg family for their dedication in running this competition for 28 years and wished them well in getting to their target of 30 years' unbroken service to this worthwhile charity.

Captain Abel conclude the Open Week festivities by thanking all the Open Week competition sponsors who had made the nine days of competition so worthwhile.

The City Cabs Open Stableford on a fabulous Open Week Saturday at Prehen needed a high scoring break of tie to decide a winner.

In the end it was Richard Ayton (10) who clinched the title over Aidan Devine (12) on a better back nine with both players having shot a fabulous 43 points. Ronnie Henderson (19) took third spot on 41 points and North West's Paul O'Hea (9) saw his steady 36 points good enough to lift the Best Visitor prize.

Mark McIvor (10) lifted the front nine prize with 22 points and Reg North (22) taught his fourball a few lesson as he compiled 23 points to take the back nine prize.

In his opening remarks at the prize-giving City of Derry Captain Brian Abel complimented sponsor James Deehan of City Cabs on the fine display of prizes, the large turnout for the competition and wished him well with the night's festivities which continued in the club house for some considerable time!

Terence Campbell returned to form on Monday, May 31, with a fine 41 points off a fifteen handicap. The evergreen Bert Whoriskey (13) took second place on break of tie from Billy Anderson (10) but it took a break of tie on the back nine to decide the placings.

Greencastle's Peter McMahon (18) lifted the best visitor prize with a fine 39 points while Prehen scratch player Ernie Heywood took yet another Gross prize with a steady 36 points.

The front nine was taken by Terry Coyle (6) with 22 points and the back nine with the same score by Billy Acheson (25). Randal Parlour started the day on fine form with a superb Hole in One at "The Firs" the 186 metre first where most players are just happy to get out with a par!

While the sun was shining at Prehen on Sunday, May 30, but a tricky breeze made scoring an interesting challenge during the Long's Supermarket Open.

By the end of the day it took a break of tie over the back nine to separate the 42 point tallies of Eddie Mitchell (12) and Jim O'Hagan (21). On this occasion O'Hagan just lost out for first place but he'll be happy with his new 19 handicap! Keith Hughes (8) took third place with a very credible 41 points.

Colin Starrett (3) (NWGC & CoDGC) lifted the Gross prize with 40 points and the Best Visitor went to Greencastle's Jim Leonard (16) with 34 points. John Morrow (19) lifted the front nine prize with 21 poinst and Past Captain Andy Meenagh (12) took the back nine prize with 22 points.
