Thomas Surge-s to front of field with excellent score at Raceview

The Saturday competition at Ballymena Golf Club was sponsored by James Henry Services and was won by Thomas Surgenor with a total of 42 stableford points.

Thomas played very steadily with two pars and a birdie at the seventh added to six bogeys for an outward nine of 22 points.

The inward nine saw Thomas post seven bogeys plus pars at 11 and 14 yielding a further 20 points.

Second nett went to Keith Barrow (22) with 41 points and on a better second nine from Fergie McKelvey.

Keith had 19 points from his front nine, which included a triple bogey at the third but his second nine commenced with a birdie and a bogey. Another triple bogey followed on the 12th but the final six holes were productive as he scored 15 points en route to a total of 22 for the second nine.

McKelvey, off 12, scored 23 points on the front nine, including birdies at the second and seventh. He couldn’t quite keep up that pace on the way back but three pars to finish saw him add another 15 points.

Jonathan Law was fourth nett with 40 points, and on a better second nine from James McClintock and Wilton Simpson.

Five-handicapper Law played the first nine to his handicap, with seven pars and two bogeys for 18 points. He birdied the 10th and followed that with five fours before completing his round with two pars and a birdie on the 18th for 22 points, pushing McClintock into fifth.

James, off 16, had equal nines of 20 points, the second of which was enough to pip Wilton Simpson (22), who could only add 17 points to an excellent front nine of 23 points.

The best gross card came from Gary Black (3) who played the course in level par gross, which included four birdies.

SPECSAVERS OPEN

Jake Carson certainly had his sights set on a high score as he plundered 47 points to win the Specsavers open event on the Sunday.

The 13-handicapper will certainly be looking at a ‘cut’ after a round of two over gross, including two birdies.

Some five points behind came John Devlin (12) with a fine score of 42 points and on a better second nine from Blair Jamieson.

The best gross prize was won by four-handicapper Adam Brady with a two under par round of 66 shots.

WEDNESDAY OPEN

This competition was won by 13-handicapper Gary Wilkins with 41 points, 23 of which came on an excellent second nine.

Second nett was Peter Eagleson (11) with 40 points, 20 on each nine.

Paul Rodgers (14) claimed the third nett prize with 39 points, 20 of which came on the outward nine.

The best gross card came from Craig McCartney (5) who shot a gross 72.

LADIES

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the ladies at Ballymena Golf Club with action in three separate competitions.

In the O2 Trophy (Stableford) event, Collette Delargy claimed the top prize from runner-up, Barbara Totten, thanks to her excellent haul of 40 points.

Roisin Quigley and Zandra Douglas filled first place in the following week’s Daisy Ferguson Greensomes (Stableford) .

The pair’s 39 points was one better than runners-up, Elaine Mark and Jennifer Eagleson.

Jacqui Brown took the honours in the Centenary Trophy (Stroke) last week with a round of 70. Second place went to Liz Small who had a nett 71.
