Thomas Surge-s to victory at Raceview

The Saturday sweep competition at Ballymena Golf Club resulted in Thomas Surgenor claiming victory.

But the 11-handicapper only secured the top prize by virtue of having a better score over the last six holes than three other players.

Having commenced his round bogey, par, bogey, worse was to follow with a non-score on the par three fourth.

To his credit, though, Thomas played the other nine holes in one over gross, which included a birdie at the sixth and an eagle three on the par five ninth which was worth five of his 31 point total, 16 of which came on the last six holes.

Runner-up was James Allen (9), also with 31 points, but he could only manage 15 points over the last six holes.

James had seven pars, five bogeys plus a birdie on the par three seventh and he scored four pars plus dropped shots on the 10th and 11th over the final six holes.

Category one was won by Michael Smyth (4), who scored 29 points, which included birdies at the second and ninth en route to a round of one over par gross, which included eight pars, along with bogeys on the fifth, eighth and 11th,

Nine-handicapper Derek Francey was category two with 31 points, which included birdies at the par three seventh and 10th. He also had five pars and six bogeys

Category three saw Trevor Magee (10) come out on top with another total of 31 points, which included nine pars.

Steven Bell (15) finished top in category four with 30 points, despite a non-event at the par five ninth, but against that, he birdied the seventh.

The rest of his card was made up of seven bogeys, three pars plus a double bogey on the 13th hole.

The best gross card came from John Robinson, who played the 13 holes in two par gross, 48 shots, which included six birdies.

Against that, he had bogeys on the second and 10th and a double bogey on the fourth.
