Thompson wins at Prehen

It was a quiet day at Prehen on Sunday as miserable playing conditions combined with a fascinating television sporting fixture list to ensure a low turnout for the 15th Sunday Society Outing of the year.

By the end of play it was Cecil Thompson’s 34 points that topped the leader-board despite the enthusiastic chase of Eamon McCourt who managed a fine 33 points to take second place.

Michael Lynch captured third spot with 32 points on break of tie from Robin McClay who finished on the same score. Martin Duddy had to be content with fifth prize when he lost out on a back six tie-breaker with McClay.

At this stage of the proceedings the Golfer of the Year looks all but decided. Martin Duddy’s 106 total is a seven-point lead over early pacemaker Clive Brolly who has suffered a comparative slump over recent weeks given his normally high winter playing performances.

Young gun James Desmond is a further shot back on 98 points but with a comfortable two shot lead over club stalwart Eamon McCourt who is languishing on 96 points despite having played in all the available outings.

Early leaders and winter society specialists Cecil Thompson, John Gallagher, Graham Hepburn and Sean Coyle all look to be ‘beaten dockets’ given the gap that the leaders have opened up on the chasing pack.

Sunday Society competition continues until early March and there is plenty of enjoyment in prospect if only the weather allows.
