Thrilling comeback earns trophy victory

Last Sunday, Rockmount Juniors completed the most stunning of comebacks to claim the Jonny Dickson trophy.

Not only were they 5-2 down to Bangor after the away leg, but, with the match hanging on Cameron McDonald’s match, he one four of the final five holes to get the crucial half point.

Junior Convenor Peter Rountree made some changes to his team bringing in McDonald and Adam Douds.

The other five were Conor McGleenon, John Dickson, Macauley Kinnear, Andy McClure and Jordan Fletcher. The first to secure a point was the junior out last Jordan Fletcher. He won every one of the first ten holes for a ten and eight victory.

Conor McGleenon out first won five and four, John Dickson won two and one.

Bangor secured a point when Adam Douds was beaten two and one. Macauley Kinnear fought hard for a one hole victory as did Andy McClure wining by two holes on the 18th.

Rockmount now led the match 7-6 with just one match still to be decided.

Cameron McDonald was four down with five holes to play and it looked like the first match would be going down the first again; that is until Cameron won four of the last five holes including a very tense 18 hole when his Bangor opponent missed a difficult putt to half the last hole and the match.

Cameron’s half match made the overall score 7.5-6.5 in favour of Rockmount.

Alan Robinson, chairman of the North Down League was on hand to present the winners with the Jonny Dickson Trophy.

In all, 24 teams took part in the competition.

Saturday Competition

As the season draws to a close at Rockmount GC, the last 18 hole competition played last Saturday was a fiercely competitive battle.

The winner Alan Bill (17) had 41 points but was closely pushed by four players who all scored 40 points.

Vice Captain Ed Donaldson (8) was second. The low section (0-11) was won by Gordon Goodfellow (11), the middle section (12-18) by Brian Heading (15) and the high section (19-28) by Rodney Allen (22), all scoring 40 points.

The best gross was by Jimmy Robinson (5) with a three over par score of 75.

Mixed

The annual Lynas Foods Mixed trophy had its usual large turn out with some 28 pairs competing.

Last year’s runners up Neill and Karen Gowdy went one better this time, wining in style.

In second were Bob Jellie and Barbara Fleet, with William and Carol Blyth third and Tom Rossi and Heather Wedlock fourth. Gents Vice Captain Ed Donaldson and wife Jo had the best gross.
