Tony triumphs at Moyola Park

Moyola Park Golf Club was the delightful setting for last week’s Shuttlecock Golf Society outing.

With the course in perfect condition and the weather surprisingly kind Tony McCaughan, playing off 16, claimed his first outing win of the season in the Low Section with a handsome total of 39 points. A run of four pars in the middle of the front nine resulted in a very solid 20 points at the turn.

On the homeward nine, pars at the 12th, 13th and 17th holes combined with a very welcome birdie at the tricky 15th hole added a further 19 points which was just enough to nudge eleven handicapper Ronnie McBride into second place.

For his part Ronnie, despite an excellent round, was in some way a victim of his own success.

His win at Portstewart’s Riverside course earlier in the season left his Society handicap two shots below his current club handicap and this proved costly in the final analysis.

At Moyola Ronnie was in fine form with back to back birdies at the fourth and fifth holes. His only blip resulted in a ‘ding’ at the notorious eighth River hole. A drive which was almost too good, ran out of fairway, leaving a lay up short of the river as the only option.

This was beautifully judged but unfortunately his next shot was not and the Moyola river duly claimed yet another victim. Fuming but unbroken Ronnie completed the back nine in an impressive three over par for a 38 point total.

In the High Section the scoring could best be described as rather modest with Bob Cummings finishing top of the heap with 27 points. His back nine total of 14 points was enough to see off his nearest challenger Derek Browne on countback.

In the ‘Twos’ competition Ronnie McBride was the only claimant.

A superb tee shot at the par three 4th hole left a mere tap in to win the kitty outright.

So all eyes are now focused on the last outing of the season which will be held at Bushfoot Golf Club on Monday 2nd September, with the Individual title in both sections going right to the wire. Its all to play for !!
