Tough day for the golfers

The poor weather just got worse as the day went on and very few ventured to the first tee after midday. Although the duties and the weather might have restricted the numbers, there was no similar restriction on quality as the early morning brigade racked up the points to claim all of the prizes.

Martin Cavanagh’s 34 points off 16 took the top prize . Martin had begun the Winter League in fine style with 32 points, but the intervening weeks have seen a succession of poor scores and NRs. His double bogeys at the 6th and 8th were the only blemishes on a very good round, a score which was all the more commendable considering the conditions in which it was played.

There is just no stopping big-hitting Andrew Carville these days as a couple of victories last week have been followed by 31 points and second place this week. After 6 holes he was 5 over par but he dropped just one more shot over the last 8 holes and claimed his prize on the back 9.

Martin Rea began his round with four straight pars, but a double bogey at the 6th and 4 dropped shots over the last four holes meant his 31 points put him into third place.

The gross prize went to the consistent Gregory Crawford with 25 gross points. Birdies at the 3rd and 9th and bogeys 5th and 12th left him level with two to play, although he finished with a pair of bogeys.

Just out of the prizes were the unlucky Coner McConville and Denis McInerney with 30 points each. Coner will rue an early pair of double bogeys and although Denis had 2 birdies on his way home, he had 3 bogeys and a double bogey over the same stretch.

After their success in winning MinorTeam of the Year at the CSAC Awards Ceremony, the golf team from St. Mary’s have been short listed for the Sports Awards. Niamh McSherry Eadaoin Ward and Annabel Wilson, all Lurgan Golf Club Members, will be attending the prestigious gala event on the 20 January in the Ramada Hotel Belfast.
