Trevor Woods was a fun-loving person and a fantastic golfer

Everyone connected to Banbridge Golf Club is still in a state of shock after hearing of the tragic death of Trevor Woods last Wednesday, writes Tommy Fee.

Trevor was one of the most popular members of the golf club and he was loved and respected by all the members.

His death comes six weeks after that of Laurence Bramall and it is so hard to believe that these two very close friends are no longer with us.

Trevor was a fun-loving person and an outstanding sportsman. He loved his football, his squash and his running.

But it was at golf that he really excelled.

He was a category one player for many years and played a prominent part in all the senior teams.

His list of achievements at the golf club is well nigh endless.

He was a key member of the first Banbridge team to win the Belfast and District Cup in 2001 and he retained his place on the team when they won it again in 2004. He captained the All-Ireland winning Barton Shield team, which beat Stakestown in the final at Lisburn in 2003.

That must have been one of the proudest moments in his career.

He played on winning Senior Cowdy Cup teams and who will ever forget his remarkable comeback in the Junior Cup All-Ireland final at Enniscrone in 2007.

He won his game when everyone thought he had lost and turned what looked like certain defeat for the team into the most memorable of victories.

Trevor won several major prizes at Banbridge over the years and he was crowned Golfer Of The Year not once but twice.

He gave generously of his time and talents to enhance the reputation of Banbridge Golf Club.

He has been a member of the club council for many years and, for most of those, has served as the juvenile convener.

He not only encouraged the younger members at home, but also travelled the length and breadth of the country with the various juvenile teams.

He nurtured the careers of several promising young golfers and it gave him particular pleasure to see his son Luke develop into one of the best young players in Ulster.

Luke was honoured with the position of Juvenile Captain of the club this centenary year and Trevor was so proud of him.

Trevor was a most unselfish man and he was always ready to help in any way he could around the club.

When fundraisers were needed or voluntary help was called for on the course, Trevor was first in line. He also caddied for his good friend Rory Leonard in all the championships Rory played around Ireland. The list is endless.

The captain, council, members and staff of Banbridge Golf Club would like to express their sincere sympathy to Trevor’s wife Linda, his son Luke, his daughter Gina and all his family circle at this very sad time.

May he rest in peace.
