Trevor Woods wins the Haughton Smyth Cup

IN the semi-finals of the Haughton Smyth Cup, Trevor Woods beat Martin McAleenan 3 and 2 and Eugene Weir beat Neil Diamond 2 up.

That set up a final between two of the best five handicappers in the club.

Eugene Weir has won this cup almost a dozen times but that did not overawe Trevor Woods, who won the cup two seasons ago.

The final was a nip and tuck affair with never more than one hole in it.

Trevor didn’t start too well, allowing Eugene to go one hole ahead. Eugene held this lead until the ninth hole.

The difficult par three 10th hole was halved in pars but then Trevor squared the match with a winning par at the 11th.

Eugene birdied the short 12th and he went one ahead again.

The 13th was halved in pars and the long 14th was halved in birdies.

The short 15th was also halved, this time with pars. So Eugene was one up with only three holes to play.

Then Tevor turned on the heat. He birdied the 16th and the 17th and he won them both. What a turn around! Trevor was now dormie one up. One good iron shot onto the green was all he needed. And that’s exactly what he got.

The final hole was halved in pars and a tremendous game finished with Trevor Woods winning the Haughton Smyth Cup by one hole up.

The match was a credit to both players and it’s a pity there had to be a loser. It was Trevor’s turn to triumph and I’m sure Eugene will be back next season just as keen as ever to get his hands on the Haughton Smyth Cup.
