Trevor’s terrific golf wins Musgrave Cup

TREVOR Murphy played terrific golf to win the Musgrave Cup at Lisburn. In the semi-final he had to be at his best to defeat Stephen Shaw, recent winner of two match play Cups.

In the final he played the big hitting Greg Bailie. Trevor’s short game more than compensated for his disadvantage off the tee.

Trevor was one ahead playing the ninth. He cut his drive into the trees while Greg’s drive was in the middle of the fairway. Trevor’s recovery found the edge of the green while Greg pitched to two feet. Trevor holed the monster putt for a half and went two ahead with a birdie four at 12.

Greg reduced the arrears to one by winning the 15th. With Trevor well short of the 17th green in two and Greg on the green, it looked likely that the match would become all square. Trevor pitched to the front of the green and Greg’s putt down the lighting fast surface slipped well past the hole. Greg missed the return putt while Trevor holed to win the hole and the match by 2 and 1.

In the final of the McKee Cup, Ricky Leathem got off to a good start against Noel Robinson. He won the first two holes but Noel immediately came back and won four of the next five to go two ahead.
