Ulster Fourball team have one foot in the final after win at Fortwilliam

Lisburn’s Ulster Fourball team have beaten Fortwilliam 3.5 to 1.5 in the first leg of their semi-final.

It was a thrilling display that puts the side firmly in the driving seat ahead of the return leg on Sunday.

In the top match Martin Rooney and Chris Davis were level at the turn.

They showed great determination on the back nine and won on the 16th green.

The next three matches all finished on the final green. Mark Jamieson and Jason Smylie were two ahead after nine holes but Mark had to hole a long putt to snatch a half.

Stephen Wilkinson and Trevor Doak were also two ahead at the turn and Trevor’s long putt sealed the victory.

Barry McQuillan and Philip Stewart combined well to reach the 18th tee all square.

Into the driving rain at the long par four Philip hit a magnificent pitch to the back of the green. He two putted to win the hole and the match.

Barry Cathcart and Glenn Cruickshanks were four behind at the turn.

They reduced the arrears but lost on the 17th green.

Speaking afterwards, team captain Alan Gilmore, thanked all the supporters for their attendance despite the really bad weather during the event.
