Under starters orders for the Michael Doherty tour

The draw for the annual Michael Doherty Spanish Golf Tour took place on Friday night in the City of Derry Clubhouse with a total of 33 players, representing golf clubs from throughout the North-West and further afield, contesting the 37th Travellers’ Trophy.

The 2014 tour will tee off in Majorca on Monday next, May 12th under the guidance of the Prehen club’s former Captain, Andy Meenagh.

No less than 10 past winners will compete this year, with last year’s victor, Maurice Quigg (City of Derry) back to defend his title in what should prove to be a very hotly contested tournament.

Two past winners who would love to win the tournament for the fourth time are Colm McCarroll (North West) and Maurice Brennan (Greencastle), as only Liam McCaul from City of Derry has won the Travellers’ Trophy on more than three occasions times having amassed five victories between 1979 and 1984.

The tournament will again make use of the two very challenging courses at Pontiente and Santa Ponsa with Monday’s first round at Pontiente while Tuesday will see the second round at the Santa Ponsa club.

It’s back to Poniente on Wednesday with the tournament drawing to a conclusion on Thursday at Santa Ponsa.

The post-tour dinner and presentation of prizes will take place at City of Derry Golf Club on Saturday, May 31st.

Meanwhile as from this Saturday, competitions for juniors at Prehen will resume.

Please enter with Sam or Sean in the professional’s shop and all cards must be returned to the shop and will count for handicapping purposes.

Meanwhile a pair of Footjoy golf shoes, ladies or gents are offer as a prize to be won in aid of funds for Junior Golf at City of Derry. Tickets are priced at £1 each and can be purchased in the professional’s shop or from Eamon McCourt (0754) 291 1590.

The draw will take place in the clubhouse on Sunday, May 25.
