Walker Cup spot for golf ace Dermot?

BALLYMENA golfing starlet Dermot McElroy could be poised to play on amateur golf’s biggest stage - at the tender age of 18 years.

The Dunfane Park teenager is in contention for the Great Britain and Ireland squad which will face the USA in the Walker Cup - the amateur golf equivalent of the Ryder Cup - later this year.

The prestigious biennial competition will take place at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club’s Balgownie Links on September 10-11.

Dermot, who turns 18 next month, was part of a 16-man squad which played a training match at the Scottish course last week as part of GB&I’s preparations for their attempt to wrestle back the trophy which is currently held by the Americans after their 2009 success.

The GB&I team will comprise of 10 players, with the squad to be announced in August.

Even by the standards of Dermot’s meteoric rise, to play in the flagship competition of amateur golf would eclipse anything he has achieved to date.

Among the players who have competed in the Walker Cup en route to turning professional are Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
