Warm weather brings golfers out to Roe Park

The busy golfing season continued at Roe Park last week as the warm summer weather finally arrived.

With the course in top notch condition the tees were brought forward for Thursday’s Club Stableford to give everyone a high scoring chance for the first time this season.

Stephen Rainey duly obliged with an amazing score of 48 points to take an emphatic win.

Having struggled with his game recently Stephen employed the services of Resident PGA Professional David Allen and the lessons ultimately paid huge dividends. Charlie Mearns also had a great round scoring 44 points and had to settle for the runner-up spot.

Kieran Berryman kept up his superb form of late, scoring 42 points to take third place and further extend his lead at the top of the Golfer of the Year table.

The annual Generation Shield took place on Friday which gave the junior members a chance to shine and compete as they paired up with the adult members over eighteen holes.

Young Phillip Callaghan partnered Arnie Simpson and won by a country mile, showing everyone what a talent he is with some exquisite shots.

Youngster Conor Colhoun, who at only eleven years old is a superb talent and another Rory McIlroy in the making.

He and playing partner Dave Allen finished second thanks to wee Conor’s fantastic display of straight hitting and wonderful short game.

Saturday saw the first Two Man Scramble competition of the season with blustery winds providing a stern test for the members.

Sean McKeever and Sean Hasson prevailed to win with an excellent score of nett 58.5.

Deadly duo Robert Godfrey and Stephen Boyd could only manage a nett 61.5 but it was good enough to take second place.

Another handy pairing in Nigel Mearns and Martin Butcher finished third on 61.75.

The Scratch Cup sponsored by The Depot took place on Sunday with golfers from all over the province keen to win some amazing prizes.

Victory went to Shane McClean from Foyle GC who finished with a two round total of 146.

Runner-up was Kyle McCarron from North West GC just beaten on count back and Roe Parks’ very own Kieran Berryman finished third on 147. Cormac McGeady from Foyle GC won the best Net with a total of 141.

First round Gross went to Johnny Greer from Greenisland GC with Simon Moore from Shandon Park winning the Second round Gross.

Conor Sharkey from Strabane GC won the first round Net with Ryan Pollock from Castlerock GC winning the Second round Net.

Up next is a Club Stableford on Thursday followed by another Stableford on Saturday, sponsored by Cheers Off Sales.

Dungiven Celtic will also be hosting their annual golf day at Roe Park on Saturday.
