Wayne to play at Lisburn course in charity challenge

Down Royal Golf Club is preparing to play its part in a unique event tonight (Friday, June 20).

The Lisburn course is one of six in six counties that County Armagh based green-keeper Wayne Haffey will attempt to play in a single day.

Wayne’s unique golfing marathon is all in aid of Parkinson’s UK, a charity which helps people diagnosed with the brain disease and funds research into finding a cure.

“I became interested in fund-raising for Parkinson’s when my friend, Gordon Adair, was diagnosed with it a couple of years ago,” explained Wayne. “Last year, we staged a very successful golf day at my home club of Loughgall. We’re holding that event again this year, but I just wanted some way to make it a bit different so I came up with this idea of playing six rounds in six counties on the same day.”

And the idea seems to have captured the imagination of local golf fans.

“As far as I’m aware, this hasn’t been done before,” said Wayne. “I do know of another occasion when six rounds were played in a day okay, but a helicopter was used at one point to get between courses. We’re operating entirely by road and I believe that will make this a first.”

Wayne will also play Enniskillen, Moyola, Edenmore and Killympon before he ‘rounds’ off his day in the familiar surroundings of Loughgall.

“I’d really like to thank everyone at Down Royal Golf Club,” said Wayne. “They’ve been very welcoming and encouraging and I’m looking forward to playing there.”
