Wilbert takes the plaudits at Brian’s President’s Day

There was a great turn-out for Presidents Day and Club President Brian Bates put up a beautiful range of prizes.

Wilbert Lyons (13) took the President’s Prize with a magnificent round scoring 43. It wasn’t the greatest of starts and although he parred the second and the fourth after a bogey at the first, he doubled bogeyed three and five.

This put him on only nine points after five holes but Wilbert is well known for keeping the head up and hit pars on the next four holes to give him 20 at the turn.

A single bogey at the difficult 10th was followed by pars at 11 and 12 but a fantastic birdie on 13 piled on the points. He got pars at the two par three holes 14 and 16, single bogeys at 15 and 18 but another birdie at the 17th was the clincher, and a well deserved and popular win for Wilbert.

Darren McShane (14) continues to play consistently and once again was up among the prizes taking the first prize with 42. Darren never hit worse than a five in his whole round and included eight pars and a birdie at the 16th.

Chris Boyd (26) used his high handicap to its advantage when he was still able to return with 42 also, but lost out on the count-back to Darren.

Chris hit six pars in his round which fairly helped with the accumulation of points. Third place was won by Christopher Maguire (19) with 41. Christopher got off to great start with a birdie at the first but double bogies and a no score at the 10th spoiled his round. He also had six pars in his round.

Alan won the next three holes in succession and clinched the match on the 17th. His opponent in the semi-final will be Mark Toman who beat Stephen Boyd 3 and 2. Mark lost the first three holes but continued to battle on and gradually turned the tables on Stephen. Tony Hamilton was always going to be up against it when he had to give Chris Boyd no less than 12 shots but it was too big an ask and Chris came out winning 3 and 1. His opponent in the semi’s will be Tommy Coulter.

Next week’s stableford competition is sponsored by MP Repairs.
