Wilf is more than 'Abel' as he bags Skipper's prize on his birthday

TIMING is of the essence in any sport and Wilf Abel (24) exemplified that by capturing the much sought after Thursday Society Skipper's prize (Mr Basil Kyle) on his 78th birthday, at Prehen, last week.

He had only a modest 16 points on his card after nine holes. The real magic happenned when he accumulated a sparkling 25 points on the way home for a fine tie-breaking victory on 41 points.

Spare a thought for runner up Eamonn Maxwell (20) whose 41 points, with an amazing 24 of them on the back nine, would be more than good enough for victory on most occasions.

Third place went to the previous week's winner John McCormack (16) on 40 points.

The front nine prize went to Jimmy Mohan (12) on 20 points, break of tie and the second nine went to Robbie Kennelly (12) with an impressive 22 points.

At the presentation dinner the outgoing Skipper paid tribute to the sterling work done over many years by the society's secretary Jim Doherty on his retirement from that office.

Eamonn McCourt was then elected to fill the vacant position. Eddie Mitchell will act as deputy Treasurer during Wilf Abel's final year in office, a role he has filled so diligently for over 15 years.
