William tops the pile at Raceview with 43-point total

Having commenced his round with a double bogey on the first hole, the 20-handicapper got his game toegther and despite another double concession on the par four fifth, he came off the ninth green with 21 points on his card.

William saved another shot on handicap with a par at the 10th, only to drop two shots on the next hole but to his credit, he managed to complete his round with four bogeys and three pars for a second nine total of 22 points.

His 43-point total was one better than second-placed Brian Phillips (15), whose opening nine holes of 21 points was made up of five bogeys, three pars plus a birdie on the ninth, worth four points alone. He added another five bogeys plus four pars for a further 21 points on the second nine.

Third nett prize went to nine-handicapper Gary Stewart with the best of three 41-point totals.

Gary recorded four pars, four bogeys and a birdie at the fifth for 19 points to which he added a dropped shot on the 10th and a superb last eight holes which he parred for an additional 22 points.

That was enough to see off John Devlin after the 11-handicapper recorded six pars and three bogeys for 20 points on the outward nine holes.

The inward nine commenced with a birdie followed by a non-scoring triple bogey while the other seven holes included four pars, bogeys and a birdie, for 20 more points.

Also on 41 points was Ryan Hamill (18) who took fifth prize after similar nines to the other two 41-point returns, only to lose out on the last last six hole total.

The final prize was won by Ian lecky (15) with 39 points, of which 21 came from the opening nine holes and a par at the final hole proved important.

In the best gross category, Christopher Magee (3) had the best score with a total of one over par.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

The club champion for 2014 is two-handicapper Gary Black, who played the 36 holes in level par 136 shots, having been one over on the first round which he cancelled out with a one under par second round.

Runner-up was Michael Smyth, who played the opening round in one over par, to which he added a five over par second round, giving him a total of 142.

Sean Mcgarry finished third, having had rounds of six over and three over for 145, one shot ahead of fourth-placed Paul Stevenson who had two rounds of five over par.

Johnny Law was fifth with equal rounds of six over par, while sixth place was David Smith who, after being 11 over for his opening round, clipped five shots off that in the second round.

ALL-IRELAND

Ballymena Golf Club’s Mail on Sunday representatives Adam Brady and John Brown finished third in the All-Ireland play-off at Powerscourt Golf Club, Dublin.

The competition had an original entry of 540 so third place at the conclusion was a tremendous feat.

They lost their opening game 3/2 to Hazelgrove, Dublin, having to give their opposition seven shots.

In their other game, they beat Tandragee Golf CLub’s representatives 2/1 to finish third.
