Winds fails to blow Colm offhis game

It was the first stoke competition of the year at Silverwood Golf Club and the weather was very challenging with strong winds up to gale force at times and soft going on the fairways.

The winner with a net 67 was Colm Doyle, he had a solid front nine with only three bogeys at the 1st, 3rd and 6th holes and six pars for a front nine of 38.

However, his back nine reflected the difficultly of the course with the strong winds and he had one double bogey at the 11th hole, one par at the 12th hole, one birdie at the 18th hole and six single bogeys at the remaining holes for a 45 back nine but this was still good enough to win by two clear shots.

In second place was Conor Hutchinson with a net 69. Conor had a front nine of 43 with three pars at the 2nd, 6th and 9th holes, four bogeys and two double bogeys at the 1st and 3rd holes.

His back nine was a great improvement with two birdies at the 12th and 18th holes, five pars at the 10th, 11th, 14th 15th and 17th holes and two double bogeys for a 39 back nine and his total of 82 net 69.

In third place was Tony Beeton with another net 69. He had a front nine of 41 with two double bogeys at the 1st and 2nd holes, one birdie at the 8th hole, three pars at the 6th, 7th and 9th holes and three single bogeys at the remaining holes. His back nine of 39 contained two single bogeys at the 10th and 12th holes and seven pars for a strong finish to his round.

The gross prize was won by Fintan McAreavey with a level par round of golf which was a great score considering the weather. He had a front nine of 35 with one birdie at the 8th hole, one bogey at the 5th hole and seven pars. His back nine of 37 was compiled with two birdies at the 13th and 18th holes, two bogeys at the 12th and 15th holes and five pars.

Fourth place went to Finbar Headley with a net 69, he had a front nine of 41 with three pars at the 1st, 4th and 6th holes and six single bogeys. On the back nine he had only two bogeys at the 11th and 17th holes and seven pars for a back nine of 39.

Fifth place went to Paul Marner with a net 70. He had a front nine of 44 with one birdie at the 7th hole, one par at the 8th hole, three single bogeys at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd holes and three doubles bogeys.

His back nine contained one birdie at the 18th hole, three pars at the 12th, 13th and 16th holes, three bogeys at the 11th, 14th and 15th holes and two doubles bogeys for 43 back nine.

The senior prize was collected by Myles Scullion with a net 71.

The competition on Saturday is the Easter Cup.
