Winter is here as Hugh returns to form

If changing the clocks and feeling colder hasn’t convincingly announced the arrival of winter, Hugh O’Reilly’s return to the top of the prizes provided confirmation on Saturday.

After a barren golfing summer, this seasoned veteran displayed his ongoing love for winter conditions and will no doubt be once more featuring among the prizes with great regularity over the coming months.

This week’s winner was Hugh O’Reilly, playing off a Winter League handicap of 17, Hugh toured the course in just 9 over par for 35pts to lift this week’s overall prize.

Olcan Kearney, playing off 4, took the low section with 31pts. Gareth Moore is never far away from the prizes and this ‘man for all seasons’ took second place with 31pts off 2. Francis Tallon was the best of six players on 30pts and he took third place on the day after a 1 over par round.

The unlucky 30 pointers were Timmy Cummins, who suffered a 1pt reduction thanks to his placing last week, James Horan, Laurence McGrady, Joe Dowey Jnr and Gary Clarke.

The middle section went to John McEvoy with 32pts off 10. Also on 32pts off 10 was Aidan Thornbury and he took second place in the section. Paul McKernan finished 3rd place with 31pts. Gary McCollum, Andrew Carville and Tony Gallery also had 31pts but were reduced to the rank of also-rans on the back 9.

Colin Darling’s great run of form shows no sign of ending and he once more found his way into the prizes with 34pts off 16 to take the high section. Willie Grogan had 32pts off 14 to come second in the section Third place went to Gopal Santokhi with 31pts off 18.

The Hanna Banana Shootout will once more go right to the wire. Leader in the low section is Timmy Cummins with 63pts while the last qualifying spot is currently held by David Sutton on 53pts. Similar positions in the middle section are held by Kieran Kearney, 65pts, and Gareth Smyth, 51pts.

The high section representatives are Colin Darling, 65pts, and Martin McCooe, 49pts.
