Winter league gets underway

BOB Patterson (20) had the day’s best score in the first week of Lisburn’s Winter League. The competition was played over the front nine holes where ‘preferred lies through the green’ was in operation.

A birdie two at the fourth gave him four points to make him a clear winner of Section 3 with Chris Warwick (22) second on 22 points followed by David Wightman (28) on 21.

Noel Robinson (12) played his first match after surgery. He opened with a double bogey seven, just missed a birdie two at the fourth but holed from 20 feet for a two at the sixth on his way to 23 points and victory in Section 1. Glen Waring (12) was second on 21 beating Richard McDermot (7) on count-back.

Section 2 was won by Andy Gibb (18) with 23 points. Three players finished on 22 with Chris Graham (14) claiming second place ahead of Tom Crawford (17) and Mark Jamieson.

Colin Jeffers (15) and Brenda McCleary (23) won the Cooper Rosebowl with an emphatic win over Sam Moore (17) and Lynda Eagleson (19). The winners were two ahead after eight holes. The turning point came at the ninth where Brenda thinned a chip which hit the flag and dropped into the hole for a four. Their opponents three putted to lose a hole they looked like winning. Brenda continued to hit enormous tee shots and with Colin’s fine iron play the match ended on the 14th green.

Chris Furfey won the Craig Cup after a close match with Robert Campbell. Robert got off to a great start winning the first two holes. He missed a short putt on the fourth to go three up. Chris won the next three holes to go one ahead.

Robert squared the match by winning the 15th but Chris won 16 and 17 to clinch the cup.
