‘Yellow Ball’ team event underway at Prehen

THE Sunday Society sponsored “Yellow Ball” Teams of four event at City of Derry is always highly anticipated while also being viewed with more than the odd tinge of apprehension!

With two scores counting at each hole, and one of those demanded from the player of the “Yellow Ball”, some players have been known to buckle under the pressure of having to deliver when the team captain turns and says, “Are you OK to take the yellow ball on the this hole?”

On Sunday the winning team of David Smith (13), Ciaran Grant (24), Dermot Hegarty (24) and Kevin Quigg (3) dealt with the pressure best as they returned 89 points in very trying conditions to take the title.

They even managed to overcome the misfortune of failing to score with the dreaded Yellow Ball at the tricky Par 3 15th, The Quarry!

A barrage of birdies from Smyth and Quigg more than compensated for this little game-plan glitch.

By contrast the second placed team played the course in the cold but dry conditions beloved of the early golfer. Rob Jefferson(12), Alastair Crockett (14), Jeremy Thatcher (16) and James Harrigan (16) powered home with 87 points. This quartet’s play was all about consistency and they compiled a neat 44 points on the outward nine and added a further 43 on the closing holes.

The third placed team of Chris Ross (8), George Curry (12), Kevin Doherty (12) and Brian McClelland (13) carded 86 points but needed a back nine break of tie to take the prize.

The Sunday Society would like to thanks all those who braved the elements to take part and look forward to next year’s competitions from October 1st under the captaincy of Jim O’Hagan.
