Good performances from U9s

Rathfriland U9s 1

Valley Rangers Colts U9s 2

RATHFRILAND U9s travelled to Carnbane on Saturday for their opening fixture against Valley Rangers Colts but lost out narrowly by a 2-1 score line.

The Valley started strongly and scored two goals early on but Rathfriland came back strongly in the second half. Andrew Pollock scored after dribbling past two defenders and placing the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Despite some excellent attacking play from Andrew Pollock and Jason Weir and some strong defending from Thomas Ingram and Mark Bronte Rathfriland lost out narrowly.

Team: Leon Shimmons, Thomas Ingram, Mark Bronte, Andrew Pollock, Reece McKee, Matthew Corbet, Danielle Megaw, Jason Weir, Will Cromie, Alan McKnight, Ben Johnston, Scott Chambers.

Meanwhile Rathfriland started their second game just as they finished their first, battling hard and challenging for every ball.

A lack of concentration in the Rathfriland defence let Midway in to score three goals in quick succession. The team seemed to lose confidence in themselves and Midway added another four goals in the second half.

Despite Rathfriland getting into the game more they were unable to score.

The young Rathfriland team should be encouraged by their two performances. Although they lost their first two matches the level of committment and effort was brilliant and as the team grows in experience the results will surely follow.
